As part of my official mandate to document traditions and sights in the greater Ardahan region in north east Anatolia for the State University of Ardahan I went there once more – in February when temperatures were still well in the two digit minus zone. It was a very fruitful visit and again I met many interesting people, like Fatma, a 106-year old weaver who still works on her carpets until midnight every day.
We also had great fun on frozen Lake Çıldır with skating classes of a vocational school or at an ice sculpturing festival. Sleigh riding and ice fishing were other activities on that lake. We’re working on several books on the region now and an exhibition of my photos on site is planned sometime later this year. But before that I’ll go back to the region for a spring/summer photo session in early June, Inshallah!
Enjoy some impressions here, you’ll find even more on my Facebook Page.
