During a journey in Jordan last August, I got the opportunity to visit the largest Syrian Refugee Camp Al Za’Atari at the Syrian/Jordan border and get a first hand account of the situation. I got to speak to the camp commander, a Colonel of the Jordan army and the UNHCR camp manager for an hour each and learned much about the humanitarian situation, the organisation and infrastructure of the camp.
The camp has a capacity for 130.000 refugees (currently 80.000 Nov-2015) and is the 4th largest city in Jordan. They’re lookig at a long term engagement, if at all the “city” won’t stay for ever.
I’ve prepared a presentation with facts, figures and impressions of the camp for schools, corporations or associations. Just drop me a line if you’re interested.
